At the heart of sustainable urban development is the development of urban green infrastructure, which is a key element of the strategy to achieve SDG 11. Green and grey-green infrastructure forms sustainable flows of cultural ecosystem services. Effective tools for monitoring the flows of cultural ecosystem services are necessary for the formation of a management strategy. The full range of utilitarian value of cultural ecosystem services provided by green infrastructure is difficult to assess in terms of agglomeration using traditional monitoring methods. Unlike traditional data sources, social media data is created by people who don't realize they're creating it. Social media platforms store information that people upload every minute and are created by people for the non-specific purpose of uploading them. The vast amounts of geo-referenced data posted on social media sites have enabled new "social sensing" approaches to measure metrics related to urban green infrastructure. The author describes how social media data can help researchers assess the value that people attach to green infrastructure and contribute to the identification of intangible benefits, such as aesthetic or spiritual enrichment, derived from interacting with green infrastructure.
