GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS ECONOMY: SYNERGY OF TRADITIONS AND NEW TOOLS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AGRO-INDUSTRIAL REGIONS

Abstract

The study is devoted to the possibilities of using geographical indications (GI) to increase the sustainability of the development of agro-industrial regions. The purpose of the article is to review the world experience in the formation and use of geographical indications by food producers, and to develop recommendations for its application in Russia. The article studies the concept, essence, types of identification and distinctive features of GI. Their ability to ensure the growth of all components of the sustainable development of agro-industrial regions is noted. The results of the study show that GI can also be considered as a tool for bringing traditional food products to the domestic and foreign markets. At the same time, world experience indicates a high degree of readiness to purchase such goods. The main beneficiaries of GI products are both consumers and producers who receive higher value added. Also, as a result of registration of the GI, external positive effects are formed, which contributes to the economic growth of the entire region in which the traditional food product is produced. An important aspect of successful territory development based on GI food products is the role of product and territory information. The analysis of submitted applications and issued certificates in Russia for appellations of origin of goods and geographical indications in terms of quantity, ownership of applicants, regions and types of goods was carried out. The possibility of registering the verbal designation "Altai buckwheat" as a geographical indication is substantiated. To increase the sustainability of the development of regions of agro-industrial specialization, the main conditions for the implementation of the concept of geographical indications are determined. The starting point for the synergy of traditions and new tools for the development of agro-industrial regions can be the proposed universal algorithm for the registration and use of GI.
