Recently, the purity and intensity of armed conflicts have been increasing in the world. The result of which is the degradation of natural ecosystems in the territories affected by the armed struggle. Freshwater ecosystems, such as lakes, rivers, wetlands and aquifers, which generate flows of ecosystem services necessary for sustainable economic development, are the most vulnerable to the effects of modern methods of armed struggle. The rapid degradation of freshwater ecosystems in armed conflict zones is leading to the emergence of new types of ecosystem risks that are currently not adequately addressed, as this is a topic that falls outside the scope of corporate risk assessment strategies. Assessing the economic and environmental risks associated with freshwater ecosystem degradation is an innovative tool to make visible the costs of freshwater ecosystem degradation and the benefits of its restoration and conservation. The author emphasizes the importance of assessing the risks of degradation of freshwater ecosystems and describes the factors of anthropogenic impact on freshwater ecosystems and flows of ecosystem services, methods of warfare. The article presents a general concept for assessing natural risks caused by the degradation of natural ecosystems in post-conflict areas.
