Within the framework of the study, groupings of types of catastrophic events were considered and systematized, which made it possible to further analyze various mechanisms for the implementation of natural disaster insurance. In particular, the instruments of public-private partnership, proportional and disproportionate reinsurance, and compulsory insurance against natural disasters are considered. The author provides up-to-date statistics on changes in the dynamics of the number of catastrophic events in the world over a long period. A fourfold increase in the number of disasters over the entire observation period was revealed. In 1996, 261 disasters were recorded worldwide, and in 2023 the number of natural disasters was already 410. An analysis of the number of accidents, victims, economic and insurance losses by region of the world allowed us to identify several countries with the largest insurance losses. Such countries include North America and Europe. The article provides an overview of the largest disasters in the world that have occurred, which have led to significant losses. The study particularly emphasizes the role of the state in the use of various instruments of natural disaster risk insurance.
